I have watched Byousoku 5cm yesterday. Wow, it's really shows who Mr Shinkai is. I can say Byousoku 5cm is the ultimate result of what he has been trying to make in these years. I mean, to see Byousoku 5cm is to meet with Mr Shinkai himself.
The first episode is a story about faint love between a boy and a girl, which has difficulties because of their own weakness. In the story, their weakness is expressed as time (their age, train's delay). The main characters are so young, too young to decide own life by themselves. However, such difficulties insoluble by own are universal things among all of us, so any viewer will be able to empathize with them. This story reminds me Voices of a Distant Star. Two characters, mails, monologues, distance and time as huge difficulty. The story ends with two kinds of emotion in the viewer's heart: hope and anxiety. That is the reason why I say Oukashou is "the second Voices of a Distant Star."
The second episode is my most favorite in Byousoku 5cm. It's a story of a girl Kanae's one-way love. She is feeling two big anxiety: approaching the time to decide the path in life and how to treat her love to a boy. This is a story of a small step of the girl's setting up of the individual self. She learns how to live on this world we can't get easily what we desired. The motif of this story, "the yearning to something which looks like hands can reach but cannot," is similar with The Place Promised in Our Early Days. But I don't think this episode is "the second The Place Promised-." I say the main character is the embodiment of story in anime and manga. And, Kanae is doing forward-looking effort different from the main character Hiroki in The Place Promised-. She gifts definitely different taste to Byousoku 5cm from The Place Promised-.
The third episode is rather short, but important story for understanding what Mr Shinkai wants to say by this film. The title of this episode is Byousoku 5cm, 5 centimeters per second, which is the speed of cherry petal fluttering down. It comes from Akari's words in the fisrt episode, but I think the reason he selected this sentence to its title is to express our slow speed forwarding own life. It also means "the speed of a person's changing by passing of time."
To know someone has changed is often sad. However it is a law of this world to which we can't escape from. It may sound fatalistic, but it is not. It means, you can choose your way by yourself. But you can't choose other person's way....even if you loved him/her so much.
The cherry petals come each flower off, and go down slowly to the ground. Even if they come off from same flower, they rarely down on same spot. We can identify own life with these beautiful petals. I believe that is what Mr Shinkai poured into this story and its title.

昨 日、「秒速５センチメートル」を観ました。この作品は、まさに新海誠監督そのものです。「秒速５センチメートル」は、新海さんがこの数年トライし続けてき たことに対する究極の回答といえるでしょう。つまり、「秒速５センチメートル」を観ることは、監督自身と出会うことなのです。
第1話は、自らの弱さゆえに解決の困難な問題を抱える、少年少女の淡い恋の物語です。この物語の中で、その弱さは時間、つまり「年齢」と「電車の遅れ」と なって表現されます。主人公達はとても若く、若すぎて自分で自分の人生を決めることができません。しかし、そのような「自分ではどうにもできない困難」 は、私達全てにとって普遍的な問題であり、誰でも彼らに共感することができるでしょう。この物語は、私に「ほしのこえ」を思い起こさせます。２人の登場人 物、手紙、モノローグ、距離、そして時間という巨大な困難。物語は、観客の心に希望と不安の両方を残して終わります。私が「第二のほしのこえ」と呼ぶゆえ んです。
第2話は、私が「秒速〜」の中で一番好きな話で、一人の少女・花苗の片思いの話です。彼女は２つの大きな不安、つまり、近づきつつある人生の選択の時と、 ある少年に対する恋心とを感じています。この物語は、少女が自己を確立してゆく過程の小さな１歩と、この思うようにならない世界を生きていく術をを学ぶ過 程を描いた物語です。「手に届きそうで届かない憧れの存在」、というモチーフは「雲のむこう、約束の場所」を思い起こさせますが、私にはこの物語は「第二 の雲のむこう〜」と呼べないように思えます。なぜなら、アニメやマンガにおいては主人公こそその物語の体現者であるからです。「雲のむこう〜」の主人公ヒ ロキに比べ、一生懸命に前向きに努力する花苗は、明らかに「雲のむこう〜」と異なる味わいをこの物語に与えています。
第3話は、いくぶん短いのですが、新海さんが言いたかったことを理解するためには重要なエピソードです。この話のタイトルは「秒速５センチメートル」、つ まり桜の花の落ちるスピードです。これは第１話の明里の言葉から採られています。しかし、私は、新海さんがこのタイトルを選んだ理由は、我々が自分の人生 を歩んでいくゆっくりとしたスピードを表現したかったのだと思います。それは、同時に「人が時間によって変わっていくスピード」を意味しています。
誰かが変わってしまったことを知るのは、往々にして悲しいことです。しかし、それは抗うことのできないこの世界の理です。これは運命論的に聞こえるかもし れませんが、そうではありません。あなたは自分の道を自分で選択することが出来ますが、あなたが他人の進む道を選ぶことはできないのです。……たとえあな たがその人をとても愛していたとしても。
桜の花びらはそれぞれの花から離れ、ゆっくりと地上に落ちてゆきます。同じ花から離れたとしても、全く同じ場所に舞い落ちることは、まずないでしょう。こ の美しい花びらたちに、我々の人生は重ねられます。それが、新海さんがこの作品とそのタイトルに込めたものなのだと、私は思うのです。
