General Information

The Place Prsmised in Our Early Days is "a tale of saving a sleeping beauty," Mr Shinkai said.

The first trailer (pilot version) was uploaded on December 26, 2002 on his website. It was really impressive, so the trailer itself won award in Tokyo International Anime Fair 2003.

The trailer shows this film is going to draw a contrast between delicate human relations (such as romantic feeling between a girl and two boys) and huge national stratagem with military power. But, from the meaning of the title, his chief aim is to convey "a promise in young age that was unable to be fulfilled," which probably everyone has one or two in the depth of heart.

He has said on his website:
"I'm putting myself in concentration into making it, with believing that it will also provide support for ourselves who are living in the actual society, by expressing the process of a 15-year-old girl, who, continually sleeping, changes to face the actual world with receiving the boys' help."

CoMix Wave announced the theatrical premier date of the film as "by the end of 2003" at first, but it was changed to "by spring of 2004" (announcement on September 24, 2003) and "by the autumn of 2004" (announcement on December 24, 2003). Finally, the film was premiered on November 20 at Cinema Rise in Shibuya, Tokyo.

He got some new staffs for this work. Mr Ushio Tazawa in character art, Mr Kazunari Takada in 3D modeling of airplane Velaciela. (The credit for it is aflo_module in the completed film.) and Mr Takumi Tanji took part in as a background art staff from the mid of making. Only Mr Shinkai himself had been drawing background arts by alone before that. Mr. Shinkai might took more and more time to complete if Mr Tanji had not collaborated with.

They planned to make the film by a few staffs, but finally over 100 staffs joined to complete it, because running time was enhanced from 50 minutes to 91 minutes and the enhancement tightned the making schedule.

CoMix Wave released R2 DVD on February 17, 2005 and OST on February 3, 2005 in Japan.

Story

-Although the history and the world were moving near by us in fact, but I thought that only the feel of her which vibrates atmosphere was all of the world, at that time -

The stage of this story is "Japan which traced different history."

In the world of this story, Japan was divided and occupied north and south after WW2. The state called Union ruled Hokkaido, and U.S. ruled the south.

The three main characters were living in Aomori Prefecture (the northernmost tip of "South Japan." Refer to this map ).

From the town in which they live, they could see the high, straight tower which rose from Hokkaido, on the other side of Tsugaru Strait.
For the boys, the neighboring country there hands were likely to arrive was mysterious, and the tower was the symbol of "yearning" or "something hands does not arrive yet now, but will be able to touch someday."

The two boys, Hiroki Fujisawa and Takuya Shirakawa, were building an airplane which was named Velaciela by using the discarded military articles. The boys had naive love for Sayuri Sawatari, a beautiful female classmate.

One day, the three make a promise after school. "Someday, we will go together to the place that the tower is standing by the airplane."

However, Sayuri showed the symptoms of the unexplained sleeping sickness, and left for Tokyo when they are in the 3rd grade of junior high. The boys disappointed, lost their passion, and stopped building the airplane. Hiroki went to a high school in Tokyo. Takuya left in Aomori.

Several years has passed. Takuya was still a high school student, but he was a member of the research institution of government consultation because of his genius brain. He devoted himself to research the Tower and its mysterious power effected to parallel worlds. On the other hand, Hiroki, who was spending aimless school life in Tokyo, became to see Sayuri frequently in the dream.

Hiroki happens to know about Sayuri's sickness. He decided to save her, and asked Takuya to support him. However, they approached the secret of the Tower and Sayuri unexpectedly. As a result, they had a conflict with each other. Furthermore, deterioration of the World's situation is being enhanced and the crisis of the outbreak of war is imminent....

- On that distant day,
we made a promise that would never be realized.-
