General Information
She and Her Cat is 5 minutes short anime. According to Mr. Shinkai, this film was made by
using skills which he had acquired in a game company. (It means his next work Voices of a Distant Star required more.) The features of this film are the antique black-and-white style and monologues spoken by Mr Shinkai himself. There is only one line of dialogue by the character "She." Contrasting with the precise arts for background and "She", the "Cat" is drawn in manga/anime style.
This film is commented on the package of the CD-ROM as "image poetry." -I think this is pretty precise.
This film has two other versions: 3 minutes digest and 1 minute 30 seconds digest. You can download QuickTime file of 1min 30sec version from his website or mangazoo.jp .
Mr Shinkai spent 5 months to make this film. Mr Tenmon and Ms Shinohara, who would co-work in Voices of a Distant Star, also participated in. This film won some awards and made the name of Mr Shinkai famous among Japanese CG animation creators. By this film, Mr Hagiwara, young producer of mangazoo (CoMix Wave), came to know about Mr Shinkai.
At first, this film was a pure amateur work, copied to CD-R and sold in CG events or anime/manga conventions. Then, Mr Hagiwara found it and proposed to sell it on the commercial route. The set of CD-ROM and a booklet was releaed from manzagoo on March, 2001. Since She and Her Cat is contained in DVD of Voices of a Distant Star, the CD-ROM set is out of press now.
For now, She and Her Cat is the last work of Mr. Shinkai's which was made entirely with his own power unlike Voices of a Distant Star which has the backing of a company in sound effects and else. He recorded the monologue of She and Her Cat in his living room by using small microphone, so you can hear MiniDisk recorder's running noise in the film. And the lighting sound of the fluorescent light is the sound of a glass being tapped by a tiepin. It's a real handmade film.
Story
--That day, I was picked up by her. So, I am her cat.--
She is a young woman living in a city near by Tokyo (maybe Saitama). One day, she got an abandoned cat. The cat liked her, she like her cat, and their time passages with happiness and sadness, as a part of this world.
