Egao ImageEgao [2003]

Straight Translation: Smile
Distributor: NHK
Category: Video clip (TV)

While Mr Shinkai was making The Place Promised in Our Early Days, he made short vide clip Egao (2min 20sec) in parallel, for NHK 's Minna no Uta (Everyone's Song) program. The song Egao is sung by Ms Hiromi Iwasaki .

Minna no Uta has been broadcasted since 1961 and many Japanese are familiar with this short music program, which has over 1100 boys-and-girls-friendly song. I've heard that Mr Shinkai loves this program too.
He made this video clip with Mr Ushio Tazawa, art director of The Place Promised in Our Early Days. (And Mr Shinkai's little brother as a scanning and painting assistant.)

Mr. Shinkai says that when he wad made an offer of this work, he reminded his friend's words, and was triggered imagination by it. She (his friend) had said "A hamster runs for several kilometers in a racing wheel in a day, and, each time he stopped, his heart goes out to that how far did he come today."

Egao's DVD is released on July 2, 2003 in Japan. The DVD includes 4 versions of Egao: TV on-aired version (it has "frame") , non-frame version, storyboard version, and multi-angule version. The last one can change before 3 version.
(Note: "Frame" means hand-drawn line with a dancing girl and a hamster, which enclosing main picture area.)

DVD also includes an interview with the singer Ms Hiromi Iwasaki, an interview Mr Shinkai and video makings.
According to CWfilms's article, Egao's lyric writer and composer, Mr Masatsugu Nagata, has optic handicap. His works attract a NHK's producer's attention.

Wind ImageWind -a breath of heart- [2002]

Distributor: minori
Category: Video clip (PC Game)
Official Site (For Adults Only): http://www.minori.ph/lineup/wind/index.html

The Video clips for Wind -a breath of heart- is Mr Shinkai's second work with minori. Characters are drawn by other staff, not by himself. Mr Shinkai's favorite things, such as a train (tram), telegraph poles, and clouds, are vividly described with good tempo.

He made two clips for this game: opening and middle stage. And, the opening clip was arranged for advertisings. The clip was included in a supplement CD-ROM of Animege's March, 2003 issue. You can download the ad-version from minori's site. (Click the middle link.)

The clip in the middle has many telegraph poles... Mr Shinkai may be loves this one more. :-)

Because this work was made in parallel to Voices of a Distant Star, some CG materials (petals of cherry blossom, etc.) are diverted from it. The process of making this movie is also exhibited on his web site.

After resigned a computer game company, Mr Shinkai did a work of minori, and BITTERSWEET FOOLS was the first one. minori is a related game company of CoMix Wave and making "for adult" games, so called eroge or galge in Japanese game comunity. However, erotic depiction is not hardly included in the part which Mr. Shinkai took charge of.

He made opening video clip, and arranged it for advertisings. This and Voices of a Distant Star are rare anime that Mr Shinkai draw anime-style (not realistic) characters by himself. The process of making this animation is exhibited on the Mr Shinkai's website.

The opening video clip was included in a bonus CD-ROM of Japanese anime magazine Animege (March, 2003 issue).

Video Clips for Falcom's Games

Mr. Shinkai had been working at gaming company from 1996 to 2000. The name of the company is not gived out officially, but it is an open secret the company is Falcom. The followings are apparently Mr. Shinkai's works.

Ys I /II Complete [2001]

Ys is one of the famous computer RPG series in Japan. The original Ys was released on 1987 for NEC PC-8801 mk2 series personal computer, and became a smash hit. Ys II was released on 1988.

Many game fans who bought Ys II were surprised because a girl character Lilia turned around in the opening like TV anime, even it was just a few seconds animation. (As far as I know, Ys II was the first RPG which has an anime styled video clip in the opening.)

Ys was remade for Windows as Ys Eternal on April 1998, but it did not have opening clip. Ys II was remade as Ys II Eternal in 2000 which has an opening clip. (Refer below article.)

Ys I/II Complete was a package of Ys Eternal with a new opening clip, Ys II Eternal, and many bonus goods including old OVA series.

You can download the trailer from here.
And, you can see many images of the opning clip and game at here.

Ys II Eternal
[2000]

You can download the trailer from here.

Notice: I don't know why but the sounds of .avi file don't synchronize to the video in my environment. You can avoid this probrem by play .rm file from here. (You need RealPlayer to watch it.)

Kakomareta Sekai ImageKakomareta Sekai
[1998]

Straight Translation: Enclosed World
Category: Short Film (Personal)

Kakomareta Sekai is a full-3DCG short animation for 30 sec created on 1998.

Sorry to say, you can't watch this now (I myself have not watched this film yet) because Mr Shinkai has stopped public presentation of it on his website with "restriction of capacity." Probably, this movie will not be exhibited again because it was a practice of 3DCG software (Lightwave 3D) for him.

Two globular characters are cute, but, according to Mr. Shinkai, its story is "a dark serious tale."

Other Main Staff
Music: Tenmon

Other Worlds Image Tooi Sekai [1997-1999]

English Title: Other Worlds
Straight Translation: Distant World
Category: Short Film (Personal)

Tooi Sekai is the first short anime (1 min 28 sec) for Mr. Shinkai made in 1997, and he continued adjusting it till 1999. The motifs, which appears in his other films again and again, repeatedly already used in it; such as trains, telegraph poles, and everyday scenery of Japanese town. The atmosphere is close to She and Her Cat
